Ramadan 2017! Yes, it is less than a month away and the first two thoughts that come across every Muslim’s mind are: excitement for the month of spiritual high and concern with the preparation for Ramadan. Ramadan is without a doubt the best time of year to be prepared. Every second of the month is valuable time that is best spent reaping the benefits of spirituality. The concern however is in our struggle to take part in the spirituality of Ramadan while working, fasting, and celebrating with lavish feasts and gatherings. So how do we have a successful Ramadan? By planning ahead!

The Best 5 Steps to a Successful Ramadan:

1. Food & Drink

Without a doubt it is crucial to have a proper diet during the long days of Ramadan. In order to maintain our stamina for the fast, the taraweh (evening prayers following the fast), and stay energized for the rest of Ramadan we need to be conscious of all that we consume. Eating complex carbs, protein, healthy fats, water dense foods, lots of fiber, and fruits & vegetables will help maintain energy levels during the fast.  For drinking, the key is to consume eight or more glasses of water in between sunset, breaking of the fast, to sunrise, beginning of the fast. One of the simplest ways to do so is to drink two cups of water with every meal during that time period. Two cups during breakfast time, two cups following the breaking of the fast, and two cups with the evening snack. Similar to water, a major concern for many during Ramadan is caffeine withdrawal. Truly the only solution for that is to get your withdrawal out of the way before Ramadan. Do so by gradually reducing your caffeine intake over the duration of the next couple weeks.       

2. Goals & Duaa List

Ramadan is the month of spirituality. It is the month of positive change and spiritual potential. We start the month with so many aspirations but end it with a few attained. The solution for walking away from Ramadan 2017 having accomplished your aspirations is planning them out. Prepare a 30 day plan which includes dedicated time for reading the Quran, extra prayers, and duaa supplications. Physically write down a duaa, prayer list to use during Ramadan and prepare a chart for your other goals. They say it takes about 21 days to form a habit and now is the best time to start implementing your goals before the start of Ramadan.

3. Sleep

Sleep is our body’s natural mechanism for ret and energization. Unfortunetly, between evening prayer and waking up early for suhoor, breakfast there isn’t much time during Ramdan for a full night of sleep. In order to gain the most benefit of the sleep time we do have, the key is to master our sleep cycles and to learn the art of taking naps. When we sleep our body naturally transitions into a sequence of repetitive sleep cycles. Each sleep cycle lasts about 1.5 hours. When an individual wakes up in the middle of a sleep cycle, they will feel tired even if they slept for eight hours. Breaking a sleep cycle is unhealthy. For that reason we need to time our sleep so we wake up at the beginning or end of a sleep cycle. Let’s say you go to sleep at 11pm and you want to wake up before Fajr prayer around 5am. Between 10pm and 5am you can fit four full 1.5 hour sleep cycles. This means the best time for you to wake up would be around 4am right at the end of the last sleep cycle. Second tip for energizing sleep is taking power naps. Research has shown the best amount of time to spend on a nap is 20 minutes. This means after a long day of work, school, or fasting take a 20 minute afternoon nap and you will wake up filling energized to continue the rest of your fast and evening prayers.          

4. Time Management

We have all been in situations where we spend time during Ramadan cleaning, shopping, gift buying, and running errands. Those tasks while necessary, take time away from achieving our spirituality goals, time reaping good deeds, and time spent with family and friends. Before Ramadan starts, try and complete all those necessary tasks in order to avoid spending time on them during Ramadan.

5. Giving Back

Every good deed in Ramadan is rewarded with 70 times its value and sometimes even more. This is the month of generosity and the month of benevolence. Plan to dedicate time, money, and acts of kindness to your family, friends, community, and service organizations. Do your research in advance and choose how you want to spread goodness during the precious month of Ramadan.      

For perspective on how Arab Americans celebrate Ramadan in the US, we asked two Arab American Khaltos (aunties) to summarize in a few sentences how they celebrate and make Ramadan special?

Amal, a Palestinian American: “For our family we celebrate Ramadan by spending a lot of time with family and friends. We go to people’s house and have people come over. For us it is about sharing a meal with our loved ones. We make our traditional dishes, our hummus, our fattoush, and makloua and share it when we eat dinner together. After dinner we like to have our mint tea with sweets.”   

Abeer, an Egyptian American: “The most important thing for Ramadan is living its values. It is about being kind to your family, your neighbors, and helping your community. Yes, we fast and we have get together but it is really about connecting with God and connecting with important things in life. In my family we make Ramadan special by decorating our home and baking kahk and ghorayeba cookies. We even share with our neighbors and let know it is Ramadan time.”

رمضان‭ ‬2017‭! ‬أجل‭ ‬إنّه‭ ‬يبعد‭ ‬أقل‭ ‬من‭ ‬شهر‭ ‬أول‭ ‬ما‭ ‬يخطر‭ ‬على‭ ‬بال‭ ‬كلِ‭ ‬مُسلمٍ‭ ‬هما‭: ‬الفرح‭ ‬بقدوم‭ ‬شهر‭ ‬الروحانيات‭ ‬العاليّة‭ ‬والقلق‭ ‬من‭ ‬الاستعداد‭ ‬لرمضان‭. ‬بلا‭ ‬شك‭ ‬فإنّ‭ ‬رمضان‭ ‬أفضل‭ ‬وقت‭ ‬في‭ ‬العام‭ ‬يجب‭ ‬الإستعداد‭ ‬له‭ ‬لأن‭ ‬كل‭ ‬ثانيةٍ‭ ‬من‭ ‬هذا‭ ‬الشهر‭ ‬قيّمة‭ ‬ويجب‭ ‬قضاؤها‭ ‬في‭ ‬النهل‭ ‬من‭ ‬روحانيات‭ ‬ذلك‭ ‬الشهر‭ ‬العظيم‭. ‬ولكن‭ ‬القلق‭ ‬هو‭ ‬كيف‭ ‬يُمكن‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تستفيد‭ ‬من‭ ‬روحانيات‭ ‬رمضان‭ ‬وتشارك‭ ‬فيها‭ ‬وسط‭ ‬صراعك‭ ‬مع‭ ‬العمل‭ ‬الصيام‭ ‬والاحتفالات‭ ‬الضخمة‭  ‬والتجمعات‭. ‬إذا‭ ‬كيف‭ ‬يُمكن‭ ‬أن‭ ‬نحصل‭ ‬على‭ ‬رمضانٍ‭ ‬ناجح؟‭ ‬عن‭ ‬طريق‭ ‬التخطيط‭ ‬مُباشرةً‭!‬

أفضل‭ ‬5‭ ‬خطوات‭ ‬من‭ ‬أجل‭ ‬رمضانٍ‭ ‬ناجح‭:‬

1‭) ‬الطعام‭ ‬والشراب

بلا‭ ‬شك‭ ‬فإنّه‭ ‬من‭ ‬المُهم‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تتناول‭ ‬طعامًا‭ ‬مُلائمًا‭ ‬أثناء‭ ‬الأيام‭ ‬الطويلة‭ ‬لرمضان‭. ‬لكي‭ ‬تُحافظ‭ ‬على‭ ‬قدرتك‭ ‬على‭ ‬الصيام‭ ‬والتروايح‭ (‬الصلاة‭ ‬المسائيّة‭ ‬التي‭ ‬تلي‭ ‬الإفطار‭) ‬وأن‭ ‬تبقى‭ ‬مشحونًا‭ ‬بالطاقة‭ ‬لباقي‭ ‬رمضان؛‭ ‬لذلك‭ ‬يجب‭ ‬أن‭ ‬نبقى‭ ‬واعيين‭ ‬تمامًا‭ ‬لكل‭ ‬ما‭ ‬نأكله‭. ‬تناول‭ ‬النشويات‭ ‬المشبعة‭ ‬والبروتين‭ ‬والدهون‭ ‬الصحيّة‭ ‬والمياه‭ ‬والأطعمة‭ ‬المليئة‭ ‬بالألياف‭ ‬والفواكه‭ ‬والخضروات‭ ‬فتناول‭ ‬كل‭ ‬ذلك‭ ‬سوف‭ ‬يُساعد‭ ‬على‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تبقى‭ ‬مستويات‭ ‬الطاقة‭ ‬عاليةً‭ ‬أثناء‭ ‬الصيام‭. ‬

أما‭ ‬بالنسبة‭ ‬للمشروبات‭ ‬فالهدف‭ ‬هو‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تستهلك‭ ‬ثماني‭ ‬أكواب‭ ‬من‭ ‬المياه‭ ‬أو‭ ‬أكثر‭ ‬بين‭ ‬غروب‭ ‬الشمس‭ ‬نهاية‭ ‬الصيام‭ ‬وبين‭ ‬شروق‭ ‬الشمس‭ ‬بداية‭ ‬الصيام‭. ‬وأحد‭ ‬أبسط‭ ‬الطرق‭ ‬لفعل‭ ‬ذلك‭ ‬هى‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تشرب‭ ‬كأسين‭ ‬من‭ ‬المياه‭ ‬كل‭ ‬وجبةٍ‭ ‬أثناء‭ ‬تلك‭ ‬الفترة‭ ‬الزمنية‭. ‬كأسان‭ ‬أثناء‭ ‬وقت‭ ‬الإفطار‭ ‬كأسان‭ ‬بعد‭ ‬انتهاء‭ ‬الإفطار‭ ‬وكأسان‭ ‬أثناء‭ ‬وجبة‭ ‬السحور‭. ‬

وعلى‭ ‬نحوٍ‭ ‬مُشابه‭ ‬للمياه‭ ‬يوجد‭ ‬القلق‭ ‬الأكبر‭ ‬وهو‭ ‬تراجع‭ ‬نسبة‭ ‬الكافيين‭. ‬والحل‭ ‬الوحيد‭ ‬من‭ ‬أجل‭ ‬تلك‭ ‬المُعضلة‭ ‬هو‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تبدأ‭ ‬بتخفيض‭ ‬تناول‭ ‬المنبهات‭ ‬مُبكرًا‭ ‬قبل‭ ‬رمضان‭. ‬ويتم‭ ‬ذلك‭ ‬عن‭ ‬طريق‭ ‬التقليل‭ ‬التدريجي‭ ‬من‭ ‬الكافيين‭ ‬على‭ ‬مدي‭ ‬الأسبوعين‭ ‬القادميّن‭.‬

2‭) ‬قائمة‭ ‬الأهداف‭ ‬والدعوات

رمضان‭ ‬هو‭ ‬الشهر‭ ‬الأكثر‭ ‬روحانيةً‭. ‬إنّه‭ ‬شهر‭ ‬التغيير‭ ‬الإيجابي‭ ‬والمخزون‭ ‬الروحي‭. ‬نحن‭ ‬نبدأ‭ ‬الشهر‭ ‬بالكثير‭ ‬من‭ ‬التطلعات‭ ‬ولكن‭ ‬نُنهيه‭ ‬ولم‭ ‬يتبقَ‭ ‬إلا‭ ‬القليل‭ ‬فقط‭. ‬الحل‭ ‬للخروج‭ ‬من‭ ‬رمضان‭ ‬2017‭ ‬وقد‭ ‬حققت‭ ‬جميع‭ ‬أمانيك‭ ‬هو‭ ‬بالتخطيط‭. ‬جهز‭ ‬برنامج‭ ‬من‭ ‬30‭ ‬يومًا‭ ‬والتي‭ ‬تشمل‭ ‬وقتًا‭ ‬مُخصصًا‭ ‬لقراءة‭ ‬القرآن‭ ‬وصلواتٍ‭ ‬إضافية‭ ‬وأدعية‭. ‬قم‭ ‬بكتابة‭ ‬تلك‭ ‬الأدعية‭ ‬وقائمة‭ ‬الصلوات‭ ‬لكي‭ ‬تستخدمها‭ ‬في‭ ‬أثناء‭ ‬رمضان‭ ‬وجهز‭ ‬مُخططًا‭ ‬لأهدافك‭. ‬إنّهم‭ ‬يقولون‭ ‬أنّ‭ ‬الأمر‭ ‬يستغرق‭ ‬21‭ ‬يومًا‭ ‬لكي‭ ‬تُكون‭ ‬عادةً‭ ‬ما؛‭ ‬لذا‭ ‬فإنّ‭ ‬الآن‭ ‬هو‭ ‬الوقت‭ ‬الأفضل‭ ‬لكي‭ ‬تبدأ‭ ‬في‭ ‬تنفيذ‭ ‬والتخطيط‭ ‬لأهدافك‭ ‬قبل‭ ‬بداية‭ ‬رمضان‭.‬

3‭) ‬النوم

النوم‭ ‬هو‭ ‬آلية‭ ‬جسمنا‭ ‬الطبيعيّة‭ ‬من‭ ‬أجل‭ ‬الراحة‭ ‬وإعادة‭ ‬شحن‭ ‬الطاقة‭. ‬للأسف‭ ‬بين‭ ‬صلاة‭ ‬العشاء‭ ‬والاستيقاظ‭ ‬مُبكرًا‭ ‬يقع‭ ‬‮«‬السحور‮»‬‭ ‬والإفطار‭ ‬ففي‭ ‬رمضان‭ ‬ليس‭ ‬هناك‭ ‬وقتًا‭ ‬كافيًا‭ ‬لكي‭ ‬تنام‭ ‬الليلة‭ ‬بأكملها‭. ‬

لكي‭ ‬تحصل‭ ‬على‭ ‬مُعظم‭ ‬فوائد‭ ‬النوم‭ ‬من‭ ‬الوقت‭ ‬الذي‭ ‬نملكه‭ ‬للنوم‭ ‬فإنّ‭ ‬الهدف‭ ‬الرئيسي‭ ‬هو‭ ‬أن‭ ‬نتحكم‭ ‬في‭ ‬دروة‭ ‬النوم‭ ‬وأن‭ ‬نتعلم‭ ‬فنّ‭ ‬أخذ‭ ‬‮«‬الغفوات‮»‬‭. ‬عندما‭ ‬ننام‭ ‬فإن‭ ‬أجسادنا‭ ‬تتحول‭ ‬إلى‭ ‬تتابعٍ‭ ‬من‭ ‬دورات‭ ‬النوم‭ ‬المُتتابعة‭. ‬كل‭ ‬دورة‭ ‬نومٍ‭ ‬تستمر‭ ‬حواليّ‭ ‬ساعةٍ‭ ‬ونصف‭. ‬وعندما‭ ‬يستقيظ‭ ‬الفرد‭ ‬في‭ ‬مُنتصف‭ ‬دورةٍ‭ ‬منهم؛‭ ‬سوف‭ ‬يشعر‭ ‬بالتعب‭ ‬حتى‭ ‬لو‭ ‬نام‭ ‬لثمان‭ ‬ساعات‭. ‬كسر‭ ‬دورة‭ ‬نوم‭ ‬هو‭ ‬أمرٌ‭ ‬غير‭ ‬صحيّ‭.‬

ولهذا‭ ‬السبب؛‭ ‬فإنّنا‭ ‬نحتاج‭ ‬إلى‭ ‬أن‭ ‬نُنظم‭ ‬نومنا‭ ‬لكي‭ ‬نستيقظ‭ ‬في‭ ‬بداية‭ ‬أو‭ ‬نهاية‭ ‬إحدى‭ ‬دورات‭ ‬النوم‭. ‬فلنقل‭ ‬أنّك‭ ‬خلدت‭ ‬إلى‭ ‬النوم‭ ‬في‭ ‬ال11‭ ‬مساءًا‭ ‬وأنت‭ ‬تريد‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تستيقظ‭ ‬قبل‭ ‬صلاة‭ ‬الفجر‭ ‬في‭ ‬حوالى‭ ‬5‭ ‬صباحًا‭ ‬بين‭ ‬ال10‭ ‬مساءًا‭ ‬وال5‭ ‬صباحًا‭ ‬يُمكنك‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تنام‭ ‬أربع‭ ‬دورات‭ ‬نوم‭ ‬كاملة‭ ‬ساعة‭ ‬ونصف‭ ‬لكل‭ ‬دورة‭. ‬هذا‭ ‬يعني‭ ‬أنّه‭ ‬من‭ ‬الأفضل‭ ‬بالنسبة‭ ‬لك‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تستيقظ‭ ‬حوالي‭ ‬الساعة‭ ‬4‭ ‬صباحًا‭ ‬في‭ ‬نهاية‭ ‬آخر‭ ‬دورة‭ ‬نوم‭. ‬

النصيحة‭ ‬الثانية‭ ‬من‭ ‬أجل‭ ‬نومٍ‭ ‬أفضلهي‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تأخذ‭ ‬اغفاءات‭ ‬الطاقة‭. ‬الأبحاث‭ ‬أظهرت‭ ‬أن‭ ‬أفضل‭ ‬مدةٍ‭ ‬للقيلولة‭ ‬هى‭ ‬20‭ ‬دقيقة‭. ‬هذا‭ ‬يعني‭ ‬أن‭ ‬بعد‭ ‬يومٍ‭ ‬طويلٍ‭ ‬في‭ ‬العمل‭ ‬او‭ ‬المدرسة‭ ‬أو‭ ‬الصيام‭ ‬فأن‭ ‬أخذ‭ ‬قيلولة‭ ‬لمدة‭ ‬20‭ ‬دقيقة‭ ‬ظهرًا؛‭ ‬سوف‭ ‬يجعلك‭ ‬تستيقظ‭ ‬مليئًا‭ ‬بالطاقة‭ ‬لتُكمل‭ ‬باقي‭ ‬الصيام‭ ‬والتروايح‭.‬

4‭) ‬إدارة‭ ‬الوقت‭:‬

جميعنا‭ ‬لدينا‭ ‬وظائف‭ ‬نقوم‭ ‬بها‭ ‬حيث‭ ‬نقضي‭ ‬اليوم‭ ‬أثناء‭ ‬رمضان‭ ‬في‭ ‬التنظيف‭ ‬التسوق‭ ‬شراء‭ ‬الهدايا‭ ‬والقيام‭ ‬بالمُهمات‭. ‬تلك‭ ‬المهام‭ ‬على‭ ‬الرغم‭ ‬من‭ ‬أنّها‭ ‬ضرورية‭ ‬إلا‭ ‬أنّها‭ ‬تجعلنا‭ ‬نستغرق‭ ‬وقتًا‭ ‬بعيدًا‭ ‬عن‭ ‬تحقيق‭ ‬أهدافنا‭ ‬الروحانية‭ ‬ووقت‭ ‬جنيّ‭ ‬الخيرات‭ ‬والوقت‭ ‬الذي‭ ‬يجب‭ ‬أن‭ ‬نقضيه‭ ‬مع‭ ‬العائلة‭ ‬والأصدقاء‭. ‬قبل‭ ‬أن‭ ‬يبدأ‭ ‬رمضان‭ ‬حاول‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تُنجز‭ ‬كل‭ ‬تلك‭ ‬المهام‭ ‬الضرورية؛‭ ‬لكي‭ ‬تتجنب‭ ‬قضاء‭ ‬الوقت‭ ‬في‭ ‬إنجازهم‭ ‬أثناء‭ ‬رمضان‭.‬

5‭) ‬العطاء

كل‭ ‬عملٍ‭ ‬صالحٍ‭ ‬في‭ ‬رمضان‭ ‬يُساوي‭ ‬70‭ ‬ضعفًا‭ ‬وأكثر‭. ‬هذا‭ ‬هو‭ ‬شهر‭ ‬الكرم‭ ‬وشهر‭ ‬الخير‭. ‬خطط‭ ‬لكي‭ ‬تُنفق‭ ‬الوقت‭ ‬المال‭ ‬والأفعال‭ ‬الطيّبة‭ ‬على‭ ‬عائلتك‭ ‬أصدقائك‭ ‬المُجتمع‭ ‬ومُنظمات‭ ‬الخدمة‭. ‬قم‭ ‬ببحثك‭ ‬مُقدمًا‭ ‬واختر‭ ‬كيف‭ ‬تُريد‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تنشر‭ ‬الخير‭ ‬أثناء‭ ‬شهر‭ ‬رمضان‭ ‬العظيم‭.   

وبالنظر‭ ‬إلى‭ ‬كيفيّة‭ ‬احتفال‭ ‬الأمريكين‭ ‬العرب‭ ‬برمضان‭ ‬في‭ ‬الولايات‭ ‬المُتحدة‭ ‬سألنا‭ ‬اثنين‭ ‬من‭ ‬السيدات‭ ‬الأمريكيات‭ ‬العرب؛‭ ‬لكي‭ ‬يلخصوا‭ ‬لنا‭ ‬في‭ ‬جُملٍ‭ ‬قليلةٍ‭ ‬كيفيّة‭ ‬احتفالهم‭ ‬بشهر‭ ‬رمضان‭ ‬وكيفية‭ ‬تحويله‭ ‬لشهرٍ‭ ‬مُميز؟

السيدة‭ ‬‮«‬آمال‮»‬‭ ‬فلسطينيّة‭ ‬أمريكيّة‭: ‬‮«‬بالنسبة‭ ‬لعائلتنا‭ ‬فنحن‭ ‬نحتفل‭ ‬برمضان‭ ‬عبر‭ ‬قضاء‭ ‬العديد‭ ‬من‭ ‬الوقت‭ ‬مع‭ ‬العائلة‭ ‬والأصدقاء‭. ‬نحن‭ ‬نذهب‭ ‬إلى‭ ‬منازل‭ ‬الناس‭ ‬ويأتي‭ ‬الناس‭ ‬إلى‭ ‬منازلنا‭. ‬بالنسبة‭ ‬لنا‭ ‬الأمر‭ ‬يدور‭ ‬حول‭ ‬مُشاركة‭ ‬الطعام‭ ‬مع‭ ‬أحبابنا‭. ‬نحن‭ ‬نقوم‭ ‬بطهي‭ ‬أطباقنا‭ ‬التقليديّة‭ ‬الحمص‭ ‬الفتوش‭ ‬والماكولا‭ ‬ونتقاسمها‭ ‬عندما‭ ‬نأكل‭ ‬سويًا‭. ‬بعد‭ ‬وجبة‭ ‬الفطور‭ ‬نشرب‭ ‬شايًا‭ ‬بالنعناع‭ ‬مع‭ ‬الحلويات‮»‬‭.  

السيدة‭ ‬عبير‭ ‬مصرية‭ ‬أمريكيّة‭:‬‮»‬‭ ‬الشيء‭ ‬المُهم‭ ‬في‭ ‬رمضان‭ ‬هو‭ ‬العيش‭ ‬بالمباديء‭ ‬والقيم‭. ‬إنّه‭ ‬حول‭ ‬أن‭ ‬تكون‭ ‬طيبًا‭ ‬مع‭ ‬عائلتك‭ ‬جيرانك‭ ‬ومُساعدة‭ ‬مُجتمعك‭. ‬نعم‭ ‬نحن‭ ‬نصوم‭ ‬ونقضيه‭ ‬معًا‭  ‬ولكن‭ ‬حقيقة‭ ‬الأمر‭ ‬تدور‭ ‬حول‭ ‬التواصل‭ ‬مع‭ ‬اللهوالتواصل‭ ‬مع‭ ‬الأشياء‭ ‬المُهمة‭ ‬في‭ ‬الحياة‭. ‬في‭ ‬عائلتي‭ ‬نحن‭ ‬نجعل‭ ‬رمضان‭ ‬مُميزًا‭ ‬عن‭ ‬طريق‭ ‬تزيين‭ ‬منزلنا‭ ‬وخبز‭ ‬الكشك‭ ‬والغُرّبيّة‭. ‬نحن‭ ‬نتشارك‭ ‬مع‭ ‬جيراننا‭ ‬ونجعلم‭ ‬يعلمون‭ ‬أنّ‭ ‬ذلك‭ ‬هو‭ ‬وقت‭ ‬رمضان‭.‬‮»‬
